Not a computer this week but storage, Straight from the Dinosaur Attic is an excellent representative from the “Vintage Computing” era of the 1980’s. This is a circa 1984 Mitsubishi M2896-63 8-Inch Half-Height Floppy Disk Drive (FDD).

Estimated Value: 0.030 bitcoin This is a fairly rare drive, does not appear on the scene very frequently. If you need an 8 inch drive, well, this comes from a good non-smoking place. |
The drive is a Mitsubishi M2896-63. This is a double-sided half-height direct-driven (no belt) model from 1984. This was state-of-the-art specs for an 8 -inch disk drive of that era. The drive supported a wide variety of formatting options and with no belt to wear out or decay with age it is probably still good to go today, However this is put up here today as untested so while everything goes out AS IS from the DinosaurAttic, this particular unit was not put through its paces on the workbench as I don’t have anything setup to configure and test this. If you need an 8-inch drive then you know the Mitsubishi was one of the top drives for its time.
The Hardware From the manual (online at the bitsavers site):
Brush-less and belt-less direct-drive DC spindle motor with no AC power supply, for simpler maintenance.
High quality and long life Mn-Zn read/write heads, requiring less or no write precompensation, enables interchangeability with IBM systems.
Media need not be specifically specified or designated by a special brand name. Diskette quality variation affects the performance of the drive only negligibly.
The M2896 flexible disk drive is the 1 to 1.2 megabyte formatted memory capacity disk drive, employing two magnetic heads for recording on both sides of the medium, at double density.
The M2896 reads and writes on an 8-inch diskette, either one or both sides, and in signle or double density, and media-compatible with IBM. diskettes 1,2 and 20 or equivalent.
The M2896 is plug-compatible to the Industrial Standard interface and same options with Shugart SA850/850R.
Two M2896’s can be mounted in a standard 8 inch FDD space.
